Gears that mesh
on the first print.
Choose the teeth and the thickness. Oryx CAD builds the gear in millimetres, Oryx Fit adds its partner already meshed, and you see right away if it prints without supports.
Available today in Oryx CAD 1.3: spur, helical and herringbone gears, matching gear, print clearance, printability check. New in 1.4, shown in these captures: the Oryx wheel, Oryx Fit and bevel gears. Included free.
In Blender, step by step.
Place the gear
Shift+Q › Create › Gear, then click where it goes. It snaps onto faces.
Set it in millimetres
Outer diameter, tooth count, pressure angle, thickness. Module and pitch are computed for you.
Add its partner
Oryx Fit on a tooth: the matching gear appears, already meshed at the right distance.
Add the shafts
Oryx Fit in the bore: a shaft that fits, with the clearance your printer needs.
The tools.
- Spur, helical, herringboneThree tooth types, helix angle from 0 to 45°.
- Matching gearPick its number of teeth. Module and spacing follow.
- Bore and keywayA bore for the shaft, with an optional DIN 6885 keyway.
- Print clearance and backlashThins the teeth so printed gears turn freely. Outside size stays the same.
- Printability checkFlank angle shown live, with a clear supports or no supports verdict.
Why not draw the gear by hand?
A gear that looks right can still jam once printed. Tooth shape, spacing and clearance all have to agree, and the plastic adds its own tolerance.
Oryx CAD computes the geometry from the values you type, keeps both gears consistent when you change one, and leaves the gap a printer needs. You stay in Blender, so the gears go straight into your project.
Good to know.
Do I need to know gear theory?
No. Type the outer diameter and the number of teeth. The module, pitch and spacing are calculated for you.
Will two printed gears turn together?
That is what print clearance and backlash are for: they thin the teeth slightly so the printed pair turns freely, without changing the outside size.
Can I change a gear after creating it?
Yes. The settings stay editable, and the partner gear follows.
Can I print gears without supports?
Oryx CAD shows the flank angle live and tells you when the gear prints without supports.
Which Blender versions are supported?
Blender 4.2 LTS to 5.2 LTS. Blender is free and open source. Texture tools need Blender 5.0 or later.
Every tool, for $14.99.
One-time purchase, nothing locked, no subscription. Runs in Blender, which is free.
